Committees / Commissions
The boards, commissions, and committees of the City of Middleton are mostly comprised of volunteer citizens appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the Common Council. All meetings are open to the public; however, all or part of a meeting may be held in closed session (no public allowed) if the item being discussed is within the guidelines of state statutes.
Without the dedication of the many volunteers who serve and contribute countless hours, the city would be unable to function. These volunteers help to make the City of Middleton a great place to live, work and play.
The City of Middleton provides equal opportunities to all applicants and prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, disability status, genetics, protected veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local laws.
Why Volunteer?
Democracy relies on residents' engagement to form better solutions to civic matters. Resident participation must include those who identify themselves as interested in and/or affected by decisions that will be made on issues relevant to them. Resident participation practices must result in decisions that reflect the community's voice.
Responsibilities
Members should represent the public interest and not a special interest group.
Members communicate between the community, staff, and city, presenting city programs and recommendations and providing a channel for citizen expression.
Establish good working relationships with other members.
Advise and make recommendations to the common council.
Commitment
While responsibility and commitment are specific for each board, commission, or committee, you can expect to attend 1-2 meetings per month for around 1-2 hours each. Meetings are held on weeknights. Regular attendance is critical to the effective operation of the board, commission, or committee. Terms are typically 1-3 years. This is a volunteer position and unpaid.
