City of Middleton Announces Selection of New Police Chief
December 13, 2024 – The City of Middleton is proud to announce the appointment of Steven P. Thompson as its new Chief of Police, following an extensive search and rigorous selection process led by the Middleton Police Commission. Mr. Thompson brings a wealth of experience, a commitment to community-oriented policing, and a proven track record of leadership.
“After a thorough evaluation of highly qualified candidates, we are confident that Mr. Thompson is the right person to lead the Middleton Police Department into the future,” said Laura Albert, Chair of the Middleton Police Commission. “His vision for strengthening community partnerships, fostering accountability, and addressing the challenges of modern policing aligns perfectly with our city's values.”
Chief Thompson brings nearly 20 years of law enforcement experience, including leadership roles as Captain of Patrol and Special Services, Public Information Officer, and Crisis Negotiation Team Leader with the New Berlin Police Department. He is a proven leader committed to fostering a positive department culture, mentoring future leaders, and building strong community relationships. His extensive qualifications, including a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administrative Leadership and training from Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command, will significantly benefit our department and community.
The committee also wants to acknowledge the exceptional candidates participating in this process. Their dedication, qualifications, and service to their profession made this decision difficult.

Mr. Thompson will officially assume the role of Police Chief on January 27, 2025.

About Steven P. Thompson:
Current Role: Captain, Patrol and Special Services, New Berlin Police Department
Experience: Captain Thompson has served 18 years in law enforcement, including leadership in patrol operations, community outreach, and school resource programs. He also serves as an adjunct instructor at Waukesha County Technical College. He holds a master’s degree in Criminal Justice Administrative Leadership and is a graduate of the Northwestern Police Staff and Command School.
