Leaf Collection May Be Over, But Your Leaves Are Still Valuable!

With the end of leaf collection season, many residents may wonder what to do with the piles of leaves still blanketing their yards. Fortunately, plenty of sustainable, eco-friendly options benefit your lawn, local wildlife, and the environment. Instead of bagging up those leaves, consider giving them a second life right in your backyard!

One excellent option is mulching leaves directly into your lawn. By mowing over them, you can break the leaves into tiny pieces that fertilize your grass and improve soil health. This simple solution saves time, eliminates waste, and creates a healthier, more vibrant yard. Another option is to use the leaves as mulch for your garden beds. Spread a layer of leaves over your soil to protect your plants during winter, and add nutrients as the leaves decompose.

Leaves are also critical for supporting biodiversity. Leaving piles of leaves in some regions of your yard provides essential shelter for pollinators and invertebrates to overwinter. Fireflies, for example, rely on leaf litter to survive the colder months, and their populations have been declining due to the lack of available habitat. With a little effort, we can all help restore firefly populations and enjoy magical summer evenings again. Let’s work together to embrace sustainable practices and make a difference for our community and the environment!
