Help Each Other During Extreme Heat
With rising temperatures and extreme heat affecting our community, the City of Middleton encourages all residents to look out for one another during this challenging time. Whether it’s a small act of kindness or a more organized effort, helping neighbors can make a real difference in keeping everyone safe and healthy.
Here are five simple yet impactful ways you can help your neighbors stay cool and safe:
- Check on Vulnerable Neighbors: If you know elderly residents, families with young children, or those with medical conditions in your neighborhood, take a moment to check in on them. Ensure they have access to air conditioning or fans, and offer to help with essential errands so they can stay indoors and cool.
- Share Cooling Resources: Only some have the luxury of air conditioning. Spread the word about Middleton’s designated cooling centers. These centers provide a safe, cool environment for those needing heat relief. Be sure to check their hours and share this vital information with your neighbors.
- Provide Hydration: Staying hydrated is critical during extreme heat. Consider sharing bottled water or setting up a hydration station in your neighborhood. Offering cold drinks to anyone who spends extended time outdoors, such as delivery workers, is a small gesture that can have a big impact.
- Create Shaded Outdoor Spaces: If you have space in your yard or driveway, consider setting up shaded areas where neighbors can gather to cool off. Umbrellas, tents, or awnings can provide much-needed relief, particularly for those without access to air-conditioned homes.
- Organize Carpooling to Cooling Centers: For neighbors without reliable transportation, consider organizing carpool groups to the cooling centers. This ensures that everyone has access to a safe place to cool down, regardless of their transportation situation.
“We’re asking Middleton to come together and support one another during this extreme heat,” said Mayor Emily Kuhn. “A small effort can make a world of difference, especially for those who are more vulnerable. Let’s ensure that no one in our community is left to struggle alone in the heat.”
