About the Water & Sewer Utility

The City of Middleton Water and Sewer Utility plays a vital role in keeping our community running smoothly. The Utility maintains:

  • 160 miles of water and sewer mains

  • 8 water pumping stations with a combined capacity of over 8 million gallons per day

  • 9 sewer pumping stations connected to the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District

  • Service for approximately 6,000 metered customers with an average daily use of 2.3 million gallons

  • More than 900 hydrants and 1,500 valves

Middleton’s water system includes two elevated towers (1.25 million gallons total) and two ground reservoirs (1.1 million gallons). Water is drawn from six sandstone wells ranging in depth from 330 to 856 feet, reaching the Franconia, Galesville, Eau Claire, and Mount Simon formations.

The Utility is self-supporting, meaning 100% of operating costs are covered through customer water and sewer bills — not property taxes.

Stagnant Building Water Advisory

If your building has been unoccupied for several weeks or months, water sitting in the plumbing may become stagnant — potentially allowing bacteria such as Legionella to grow.

While the City ensures a safe public water supply, property owners are responsible for maintaining water quality within their buildings.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides a helpful guide for safely reopening buildings. Please follow the recommended steps and contact the Middleton Water Utility at (608) 821-8370 with any questions.
