The focus of the Middleton Recreation in-house Grades 1-2 Basketball League is to teach basketball skills including passing, defense, dribbling, shooting on 9 foot hoops, and coordination to prepare them for the 3rd grade transition to 3 on 3 leagues.
Registration
*Registration closes November 29. Jerseys are ordered for all players enrolled on this date.
*Late registration will only be accepted if there is space available on a team in that grade level. A $10 late registration fee will apply.
Practices
*Participants will practice the first four weeks (Saturdays) of the season. focusing on drills and skill development. The goal is to develop skills and utilize them in games the last four weeks (Saturdays) of the season.
*Practices and games are on Saturdays; there is no weekday commitment.
Games
*The season will end with a four-game schedule beginning February 19th.
*3 v 3 games will be played on half court. There will be two 3 v3 games played at the same time - one on each end of the court.
*Games consist of two 10 minute halves with a running clock.
*Each 3 v 3 team will play two games each Saturday. Games will be played back to back with the total time in the gym being one hour.
Team Composition
*We plan to have a 1st grade program and a 2nd grade program. If registration is insufficient to offer 2 leagues, we will combine the grade levels.
*Players in grades 1-2 will be placed on rosters for the school they attend.
If necessary, players from schools in close geographical proximity will be placed together to fulfill roster requirements.
If circumstances require, students from the same school will be separated to allow for even-sized rosters.
Coaches
This is an all-volunteer, parent-led program. Parents are strongly encouraged to participate in practices and games.
*At least two volunteer coaches are needed per team. Each team will split up their players at the beginning of each game and they will play for two 10 minute halves. Then one team will switch sides so everyone plays everyone. This allows more touches for all players, and more playing time because there will be 6 people playing at a time as opposed to 5 in your typically 5 v 5. Two coaches allow players on each half of the court to have a coach during their game.
*Volunteer coaches will be paired with their child.
*Coaches meeting will be Wednesday, January 19th at 6:30pm via zoom.
